Paxil, Zoloft, and other SSRI Antidepressants
|
** News Update ** GlaxoSmithKline has lost the first Paxil court case. The pharmaceutical company must now pay $2.5 million to the family of a three year old boy who's mother took Paxil during pregnancy. Paxil was determined as the cause of a severe heart defect. |
Paxil, the antidepressant drug, is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Paxil has been linked to numerous birth defects, including persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). Pregnant women who take Paxil could be more than 6 times as likely to give birth to an infant suffering PPHN. PPHN is a condition where the blood of a newborn does not properly flow through the lungs, causing a lack of oxygen in the blood stream, often resulting in developmental delays and even death.
Women who are pregnant or may becomoe pregnant should consult with a physician if they are currently taking, considering taking, or considering discontinuation of Paxil (paroxetine).
