Reglan (Metoclopramide)
The FDA has recently issued a warning regarding metoclopramide, marketed as Reglan, linking the drug with a dangerous neurological disorder, tardive dyskinesia. Reglan is a prescription drug used as a digestive aid. Reglan works by pushing food quickly through the stomach into the intestines and is generally prescribed for heartburn or diabetic gastro paresis.
Tardive dyskinesia is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary and continual moments of the face and extremities, including but not limited to altering facial expressions, tongue protrusion, lip smacking, puckering and pursing, rapid blinking and rapid movement of the fingers. There is no known cure for tardive dyskinesia, and the condition may persist permanently, even after withdrawing from Reglan.
