Heparin
Baxter International has recalled its supply of heparin, a blood-thinner sometimes used on patients undergoing dialysis or heart surgery. This drug has been recalled due to unexpected and unintended side effects, up to and including death. Initial Baxter International investigations suggest that a "fake ingredient" is the culprit. Baxter International and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are currently investigating Changzhou SPL, a factory in Changzhou, China where the contaminant has been found. Samples from shipments from the Changzhou SPL factory to a Wisconsin-based company also tested positive for the contaminant. That company, Scientific Protein Laboratories, owns the Chinese factory and also buys crude heparin from other suppliers in China.
The FDA found quality control problems at Scientific Protein Laboratories’ Changzhou SPL factory. The FDA has acknowledged violating its own rules by saying the Changzhou SPL factory had never before been inspected. The FDA has concluded that 246 deaths from January 2007 through May 2008 appear related to the tainted heparin. Other side effects of the contaminated heparin include vomiting, nausea, and breathing difficulties.
