Fosamax and Esophageal Cancer
A recent British study has linked bisphosphonates, including the popular drug Fosamax, to a doubled risk of developing esophageal cancer. Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs are prescribed to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis. The study found that patients who had taken bisphosphonates for over five years were nearly twice as likely to develop cancer of the esophagus than patients who had never taken bisphosphonates. Patients who were prescribed any bisphosphonate, including Fosamax, for any length of time experienced a 30% increased risk of developing esophageal cancer over patients who were never prescribed the drug.
