Fosamax
New reports have been surfacing regarding the bone loss drug Fosamax. Fosamax is a popular bisphosphonate used to treat osteoporosis and osteopenia in post-menopausal women, chemotherapy patients, and other disorders involving bone loss. However, new evidence is suggesting that for some women, extended use of Fosamax isn't strengthening bones. Instead, Fosamax appears to be weakening the bones of some women, making bones susceptible to dangerous fractures of the femur (thigh bone), considered the strongest bone in the body.
Data released recently by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) suggests that extended use of bisphosphonates including Fosamax can increase the risk of dangerous femur fractures. Stories of women who have snapped their femurs in half by simply walking have been showcased on ABC News. Dr. Richard Besser of ABC News has suggested that Fosamax may eventually make bones so hard that they snap. One study from the AAOS suggests that Fosamax and other bisphosphonates may interfere with the body's process of replacing bone tissue, resulting in brittle bones, which could lead to a femur fracture.
Fosamax Litigation
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Merck since 2006. These lawsuits have claimed that Fosamax, instead of increasing bone density, caused deterioration of the bone in both the jaw and thigh. In July of 2010, $8 million was awarded to Shirley Boles, a Florida resident. After being prescribed Fosamax for osteoporosis, she developed a marked deterioration of her jaw bone, resulting in dead jaw. The jury in this case found Fosamax "defectively designed" and "unreasonably dangerous".
