Depakote
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently warned that women should not take Depakote while pregnant. Depakote has been prescribed for decades as an anti-seizure medication. However, recent studies have shown a correlation between Depakote and major birth defects, including spina bifida and other birth defects of the brain, spine, and heart when taken by pregnant women. Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spinal cord does not fully form. Severe cases of spina bifida can cause nerve damage, paralysis, seizures, curved spine, mental retardation, and an allergy to latex.
Depakote (divalproex sodium) is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories for the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and migraine headaches. Depakote was approved by the FDA in 1983, with the link between Depakote and birth defects only recently being discovered. If you or a loved one has given birth to a child with spina bifida or other serious birth defects while taking Depakote, Depakene, or any other valproic acid compound, you may be entitled to compensation.
