Boniva

Boniva (ibandronate) is a prescription drug indicated for bone loss in post-menopausal women, chemotherapy patients, and disorders involving bone loss. Boniva is in a class of drugs called bisphosphonates, along with Fosamax and Actonel. Bisphosphonates have recently come under fire after reports of atypical femur (thigh bone) fractures have been occurring in women taking Boniva and other bisphosphonates. New evidence indicates that extended use of drugs like Boniva aren't strengthening bones, but are instead doing the exact opposite.
According to data released by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), bisphosphonates including Boniva can increase the risk of femur fractures. Reports of women experiencing atypical femur fractures by doing nothing more than walking have been shown on ABC News. In late 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration acknowledged that there may be a link between thigh bone fractures and bisphosphonates.
Competing theories as to why bisphosphonates such as Boniva cause femur breaks have surfaced. One study from the AAOS suggests that Boniva and other bisphosphonates may interfere in the body's process of replacing bone tissue, leaving behind brittle bones that could lead to a femur fracture. Other experts have suggested that Boniva may be making bones too hard, causing them to snap.
