Defibrillators and Pacemakers
Guidant has issued a Class I recall for some of their defibrillators. In a Class I recall, there is a reasonable probability that if a particular device is malfunctioning, the malfunctioning device will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Guidant's devices can develop a short circuit from deteriorated electrical insulation, preventing the required shock to prevent abnormal heart rhythms. There is no test or notification of any impending failure of these devices.
Medtronic has also announced a Class I recall of some of their implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. Medtronic's devices make take longer than normal to charge and can delay the appropriate treatment to a patient. Not receiving the appropriate treatment may result in patient injury or death.
