Listeria
Recalled cantaloupe melons have been identified as the culprit for the deadliest food outbreak in over a decade. The cantaloupes were tainted with listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious injury or death, mostly to the elderly, women who are pregnant, and those with weakened immune systems. Listeria is much more deadly than other common food-borne bacteria, such as salmonella and E. coli. Persons who have consumed listeria may not become ill for weeks after consuming the tainted food, making the tracking of listeria much more difficult.
The deadly listeria outbreak originated at Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado from failures to properly clean and sanitize equipment and other processing problems. Jensen Farms has issued a recall for its cantaloupes, but tracking the contaminated produce is incredibly difficult. Lawsuits have already been filed against Jensen Farms for their negligence in allowing the contaminated cantaloupe to reach the market. Another recall for romaine lettuce has also been due to positive tests for listeria. Fortunately, no one has yet fallen ill to the True Leaf Farms romaine lettuce recall.
