HCG Platinum

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a popular weight loss drug component.  However, HCG products, including HCG Platinum, have never been approved for weight loss, and now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has called HCG weight loss products fraudulent and illegal.  HCG is a hormone made by the placenta during pregnancy and is approved as a prescription for infertility.  HCG is probably best known for its role in the Manny Ramirez steroids scandal when it was used in an attempt to fool drug tests.

While HCG does not appear to be an immediate safety risk, randomized controlled trials have shown that HCG is no better at weight loss or hunger reduction than a placebo.  HCG Platinum is sold as a homeopathic drug, but is not made with homeopathic substances.  According to the FDA, HCG products are not recognized as homeopathic, making any marketing for HCG products as homeopathic illegal, false advertising.  HCG Platinum advertising promises dramatic weight loss when used in conjunction with a very, very low-calorie diet of no more than 500 calories daily.  No studies have proven the weight loss efficacy of any HCG product, including HCG Platinum.
