A Massachusetts jury has ruled against a tobacco company, awarding $71 million in compensatory damage to the son and estate of a woman who died of lung cancer.  Marie Evans was 54 before passing away, and had been smoking for over 40 years.  But the heart of the matter at this case is WHY Marie Evans started smoking in the first place.

Willie Evans, the deceased's son, alleged that Lorillard Tobacco Company gave his mother free cigarettes as a child.  The jury ultimately decided that Lorillard made a practice of trying to entice black children to smoke by giving away free cigarettes in urban neighborhoods.  Marie Evans' lawyers stated that Marie first received free cigarettes at the age of 9, giving them to her sisters or trading them for candy.  She began smoking at age 13.  Read the entire news story here.
