Rollover Accidents

SUVs and Light Trucks are still prone to rollover accidents...
...regardless of tire integrity.

Contrary to popular belief, even after the furor that arose from the Ford/Firestone rollover cases in 2000, SUVs and light trucks still pose an unnatural risk of rollover accidents.  An estimated 200-300 people died due to the tread separation tire blowouts of Firestone tires on Ford Explorers.  However, on average, over 10,000 people die each year in rollover accidents.  In 2002, rollovers constituted 3% of all vehicle accidents, but were responsible for 33% of deaths.

Between 2001 and 2003, in single car accidents, passenger cars experienced a rollover in 12% of these accidents.  By comparison, SUVs averaged a rollover rate of 28% and pickup trucks averaged a rollover rate of 27%.  Some pickup truck models averaged a rollover rate of 40% and some SUV models averaged a rollover rate of 45%.  SUVs have also been shown to be four times as likely to rollover and three times as likely to kill occupants than passenger cars.

SUVs are not safer than passenger cars...
...even with the increased size and weight.

A 2006 study published in the journal Pediatrics examined the relative risk of injury to children involved in SUV and passenger car accidents.  The study, entitled Risk of Injury to Child Passengers in Sport Utility Vehicles, concluded that the risk of injury for child passengers in SUVs is similar to risk in passenger cars, conflicting with the original expectations of the study administrators.  The study also notes that a 14% decrease in risk of injury occurs in every 500 pounds of added weight, with the average SUV weighing 1300 more pounds than the average passenger vehicle.  This added protection would decrease risk of injury in the average SUV by more than 35%.  This added protection is completely negated by the increased risk of rollover accident.
