Haldol™ / Haloperidol Injury
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that there is risk of sudden death, QT prolongation and Torsades de Pointes (TdP) for patients treated with Haldol™ or Haloperidol. The danger seems to be greater in patients whose dosage is administered intravenously. The FDA has not approved intravenous injection of this anti-psychotic medication.
Haldol™ is commonly used by physicians to treat schizophrenia and Tourette's syndrome. A common "off-label" use is for treatment of severely agitated patients in an emergency room or intensive care setting.
QT prolongation and TdP are irregularities in the function of the heart. For normal function, the heart requires precise timing of electrical signals. QT prolongation and TdP can lead to ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death.
