Kugel Mesh Patch™

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall on several models of the Kugel Mesh Patch™ manufactured by Davol, Inc., a subsidiary of C.R. Bard, Inc.  On February 1, 2007, the FDA elevated the recall to Class 1 status because the defect could cause serious adverse health consequences, including death.  If a Kugel Mesh Patch™ was used in your hernia repair surgery, your health may be at risk.  You should consult an experienced attorney to determine how best to protect your rights and ensure your safety.

The Composix Kugel Mesh Patch™ was initially FDA approved in 2001.  The patch is constructed with a "memory recoil ring".  This ring has proven to be the potentially defective component of the patch.  Defective rings can cause abdominal pain, bowel perforation or chronic enteric fistulas.  Untreated, these complications can lead to permanent disability or death.

Davol, Inc. initially announced a voluntary recall of certain Kugel Mesh Patches in 2005.  Since then, more information has surfaced regarding the potential risks associated with the design of the memory recoil ring.  Additional Kugel Mesh Patch™ models have been recalled over the past two years.  The recall was elevated to Class 1 status when the FDA determined that the defect has a reasonable probability to cause serious health problems, including death.
