Tainted Tissue Transplants
Tissue transplantation is a burgeoning area of medicine that is used to save or enhance lives. Every year in the United States a million-plus individuals undergo some type of tissue transplant procedure in hopes of either relieving pain or undoing a disability. These procedures could be organ or body part transplants such as heart, kidney, liver, tendon, cartilage, bone marrow, cornea and others. Just like the pharmacuetical industry this is very profitable field, worth over a billion dollars a year.
While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the harvesting of these organs and body parts, private businesses operate this industry. It now appears that some companies may have had deficient ‘cleansing and processing’ procedures in place, illegally harvesting thousands of body parts and organs and sending them out to hospitals to be used in transplants. Unfortunately these tainted tissues may have been used in thousands of transplant surgeries.
In 2006 the FDA recommended that all tissue transplant patients be tested for infectious diseases such as HIV, fungal infection, hepatitis (B and C), AIDS and others. In light of these developments, The Law Offices of Larry H. Parker and associate attorneys have initiated an investigation into this matter.
